Giving Up

You know, when it comes to just about anything, you're always going to have to compete.

It doesn't matter if its school grades, athletics, at your job, in the gym, etc. Whether you choose to believe it or not, YOU ARE COMPETING.

After watching the Saints/Eagles game last night. I had this sickening feeling in my gut. Anyone with one functional eyeball could see that the Philadelphia Eagles gave up...

They not only gave up, but they completely quit. This is a terrible message to send to kids who look up to them, their fans, Coach and the City of Philadelphia.

This is why I believe it's important to teach kids (at a very young age) the importance of H.E.A.R.T.

Times are going to get rough, sometimes they might down right suck, but if you give up, it will NEVER...EVER get better. You have to dig deep, look inside yourself, put your big boy/girl pants and get to work.

The showed absolutely NO H.E.A.R.T and definitely forgot their big boy pants in Philly.

While you where relaxing...

There is somebody out there working their ass off to take your spot, or keep theirs.

Whether they're getting up 10 minutes earlier to start their day, getting in an extra rep, shooting another free throw, running another gasser, watching more game film...doesn't matter. Somebody out there is working harder than YOU at this moment RIGHT NOW!

My question to you is, "what are you going to do about this"?

Ryan Long

How many "sane" people WANT to get punched in the face?  Or kicked, how 'bout choked out?  I think I'm in the majority who would rather watch it, then be an active participant...But that's just me though.

How many times have you witnessed that guy or girl talk a big game, and never REALLY get into a fight?  It's nothing but loud talk, idle threats and posturing.  But when it comes time to knuckle down, they don't want any part of the action.

Not my man Ryan Long.  Ryan is one of the few who actually WANT to get punched in the face.  Well, he DOESN'T want to get punched in the face, but when you cage fight, it kinda comes with the territory.

But this is the thing about Ryan, he's not your average, on TV, highly paid, highly endorsed fighter.  He's a family man with a full time job.  And still he makes the time to train, provide for and support his family.

Anyone who has trained for anything (with the intent of actually participating in said event/sport) knows that it takes a lot of discipline to follow through to the end.  Did you know that after Ryan's last fight (29SEP12) which was a Saturday, Ryan was back in the gym training that Monday?

Of course you didn't, because Ryan doesn't blow his own horn (I'll do that for him!).  Ryan has the H.E.A.R.T of a champion.  He stays humble and works his ass off, whether you acknowledged, know, or appreciate it.

Well I appreciate Ryan, keep moving forward and kicking ass fam.

Seriously...Who does this...?

Every beginning to Football Season, I can't help but think of my little mans Nick Gavin.  Seriously, I can't.  I mean, I'm a football dude, I am.  But this little guy (he's not little anymore, but to me he will always be my little dude) is the epitome of the "football spirit".  Let me take you on a trip to memory lane...

I first met Nick when he was 4, maybe 5.  And if you ever met him, you know he isn't the biggest kid in the world (neither am I though...).  So I go to Tim Gavin's house when I first move to Maryland, because he invited me over and I had NO friends in the area.  I had no idea what was in store.  Made no reservations, I just went to see what was what.

So I get to Timmy's crib, his Mom's and Pop's where mad cool (to this day, I feel like they're MY Mom's and Pop's) and his little brother (Nick) was CRAZY cool.

We kick it for a minute, and Nick tells me that one day he wants to play football.  Well, anybody who knows me, knows that football is the way in with me (or just about any sport).  So I tell him that I play and that we can run through some drills, so he can see what it feels like to be a REAL football player.

I teach Nick the basics of "tackling".  So before we know it, we're basically running two man Oklahoma drills with the two of us.  I don't know where my head is at (this is LITERALLY the FIRST time I'm at Timmy's house) but when when Nick comes to tackle me (I'm on my knees 'running' at him in the drill) I "juked him". This, being a Tail Back, was a natural reaction.

What I want you to do is look at the picture below.  This is an estimate of the fireplace that the Gavin's have at their home.  This is the fireplace that will be the focal point of this story....

So, Nick Gavin comes to "tackle" me.  I "juke" him.  As a 4 year old kid, he' coming FULL STEAM...He misses (if you see the fireplace above, you can imagine the rest of the story...).  His nugget hits into one of the fireplace bricks...'Till this DAY, I still feel bad...Nick rams his nugget into the fireplace (I STILL can't believe it!).  Seriously, after 2 maybe 3 minutes, he has a nugget the size of a basketball chillen on his forehead.

Me being the "new kid" in the neighborhood and it's my first time in Timmy's house, I'm thinking....,"fuuuuuuuuuccccccckkkkkkkkk".  Seriously, I am.  But, there is something in this kid's eyes that tell me something else.  Don't get me wrong, he's crying because he just took a header into a fricken fireplace. But he has this look like, "I'm gonna tackle your black ass before you go home"...Seriously...that's what I saw.

After about 3-5 minutes of "babying", Nick Gavin put on his "big boy Lancer Pants" and wanted to go again!  This 4 year old had a Watermelon chillen on his forehead and he STILL wanted to tackle ME!

At this point, I KNEW this kid was special.  I knew NOTHING would stop him, even though life would through him many, many curve balls because of his height and size.  Although he may have paused, this kid had NEVER stopped.  His heart and determination are what set him apart from his classmates.

The only 2 dudes I love younger than me, more than anything else are Booshi Bear and Nick Gavin.  I want nothing but the best for BOTH of them.  Nothing....

#HEART Contract

Before you start reading this blog post, I would like you to actually READ the picture of the contract my awesome sidder Kashia Marshall made for her youngest son, Shawn "Punchie" Marshall...

Dope isn't it?  How many times have YOU had to have someone else motivate you to get going?  How many times did YOU want to quit, but someone else didn't let you?  Who's MOM does something like this?

Apparently MY sister (aka sidder) does!  How cool is this?!?!  How awesome is it to have #HEART instilled in you before you even know the concept of it?  How many kids grow into adults (this term can be used lightly, and we ALL know THIS is true) and have absolutely no testicular fortitude?

My kick ass sidder has set the ground rules for the upcoming season and hopefully the rest of my nephew's life.  It may seem "hard" that he can only cry if he's bleeding or has a broken bone, but what happens to his #Toughness if he crys over something trivial?

I'll tell you what happens...he becomes a whiner, a complainer and everything is somebody else's fault.  Period.  And this is something he'll carry with him for the rest of his life.  I don't want this, his Moms doesn't want this...and I KNOW his Pops doesn't want this (even though he's a Giant's fan...I won't take that any further).

This contract will most definitely set my nephew Shauny on the right track to realize the true definition of #HEART for himself when he gets older.  He may not appreciate it now, and he may not realize the ramifications of this contract.  But WE do.  And when he gets older, he will too.

Thank you Sidder for making so important look so simple and understandable.  This is easily one of the illest things I have EVER seen...

Guess what CAN'T be measured....

For every "Combine", every "Pro Day", every "Weight Limit", there are sections of the particular player which can be quantified.  I think it's funny, because, we measure what we can see, feel and touch, instead of actually measuring what actually COUNTS...

The one thing that completely implodes the concept of "scouting" and "COMBINES" is Mike Mamula.

I hate to throw the guy (continuously) under the bus...but hey, he went from a No-Name to a 1st Round Pick.  Did the Eagles actually do their homework before making this pick, or did they fall in love with the #'s...?

The funny thing is, is that Mike had ALL the #'s to make you fall in LOVE with him.  The only thing is that these numbers came in shorts...with no opponent...and no game tape.

To accurately measure a player, you have to see tape, talk to teammates/coaches/opponents, talk to them in person AND see them play in PERSON.

The one thing you CAN NOT measure is someones #HEART.  An individuals #HEART is something that makes them want to get up off the ground and keep going.  Get up early in the "Off-Season" and grind or watch tape when most of the team is watching cartoons.

#HEART can not, will not and most likely will NEVER be able to be quantified...I'm good with that.  Because it's a "feeling", a "way of thinking"....If you never experienced it, you'll never know.  If you have, then you KNOW that there is NO # that will ever encompass it.

A Marine once told me this...(The Six P's)

Proper
Planning

Performance

Do you want to be successful?  Do you want your plan to work?  Want to win?  Want to start?  Do you want to get out of bed and be able to do the best you can?

If you do, following the Six P's can't do anything but increase your chances.  What do you have to lose?

Off-Season

Every shirt that is created by H.E.A.R.T Athletics LLC is either rooted in our beliefs, or tailored to a specific athletes liking.  Other companies (no name, no blame) just tend to make cookie cutter crap because of their logo.  *Blogger Note*  I think my business logo trumps theirs...but that's me...

When we created the "Off-Season" shirt (available in Men's, Women's and Youth...), the purpose was to inform those who "believe" in this time of year, that this time of year actually does not exist.  If it actually did exist, Saint Nick would be enjoying it from December 26 to December 24...Exactly.

Any competitive athlete knows (or SHOULD) know that training should be year 'round.  Where the problem lies is that most athletes want to get by on mere talent alone...yeah, that doesn't really work past the High School level.  But the fact remains that it shouldn't exist on that level at all.

The Off-Season is a myth.  It does not exist.  If you want to get better, be better, play better...you have to put in work.  There is no time for days off.  If you want to take days off, don't play.  Don't waste yours or your teammates' time.  Some people actually WANT to win.

So the next time you think the "Off-Season" actually exists.  Go to NIKE's website and order one of the atrocities...

Lazy but Talented...

If you look at this shirt...I mean REALLY look at this shirt, it should piss you off.  It does for me.  I look at this shirt and it makes me sick to my stomach.

There are several reasons why this shirt bothers me, and I'm going to try and explain...

1. "Lazy but Talented"...what is the moral behind this phrase?  What/where is the motivation?  You're talented, ok, there are a ton of people with talent.  But you have the audacity to tell me that you're lazy as well?  Stupid...plain stupid.

2. I WAS the lazy but talented kid.  I look back at the talent that I wasted not working as hard as I should have been.  My college career was cut short because I was too lazy to go to class.  I look at this shirt and NIKE wants kids to think that it's cool to half-ass things...?  Stupid...

3. While you think it's cool to coast and not work hard, there is some kid out there (with probably less talent than you and a much bigger H.E.A.R.T) working his/her ass off to make you look like the lazy bastard you were all off-season.

4. This shirt was made for a professional football player.  What a great item to make for the youth to want to wear and emulate.  Do you really want your kid looking up to a Pro who endorses this type of sentiment?  Is this what you want your kid to strive for?

5. This shirt should now piss you off.

The most thankless job in sports...

Every sport has it's guy/gal who puts in "dirty" work.  Whether it's Baseball/Softball (catcher), Basketball (rebounder, defender, hustle player, charge taker) or Soccer (Goalie...the proverbial goat).  These players are normally NEVER recognized unless something bad happens to the team.  Unfortunately, we all know this is true.

This brings me to football.  In football, when it comes to Kick-offs, the player who gets the most love is normally the kick-off returner.  But for some reason, when kick-offs aren't returned for touchdowns, we never have any appreciation for the kick-off team...strange...

The kick-off wedge buster is ALWAYS a dude who plays his #HEART out.  They never get any love, usually accumulate minimal stats, but continue to play their asses off.  I found a clip of a High School player who exudes the amount of #HEART it takes to do his job, game in and game out.  Check out the clip HERE.

Regardless of making the tackle or not, most wedge busters don't receive the love they should.  They put it all on the line to ensure someone behind them can get the stat.  They normally aren't celebrated at all, but they usually don't give a sh!t.  It's all about going hard and playing the with #HEART.

Let's face it, without wedge busters...a great kick-off returner is going to be one-on-one with a kicker.  And nobody EVER wants to see this.  Hahaha.

It's not where you start, it's where you finish...

Before I start this blog post...I want you to take a look at this helmet.  Are you good?  You see it?  Good...This helmet represents more to a few than most, but those who recognize it realize that it represents a ton of #HEART.

I realize that I may be coming off as a "homer" because I wore it, but the fact of the matter is, it represents alot more to me than most (although every fan of this helmet feels the same).  This helmet represents hard work, dedication and preparation.

This helmet has won Chips (Championships) in 3, count'm, THREE different DECADES.  The 80's, 90's and the 00's (and thanks to Urbana it won a few less, but hey, who's counting...).  The point is, that anything less than #1 is not accepted.

In 1995, the Linganore football team won 9 out of 10 regular season games.  The ONE game it lost, it lost by ONE point (I know, a loss is a loss, but we HAVE to put that loss in perspective).  Out of the 8 teams that made the 2A Playoffs, Linganore was the 7 seed...SEVEN!

That didn't matter to this team.  It knew that regardless of how it started or how people "viewed" it, it had to produce in crunch time to produce results.  Without a home game in the Playoffs, it won every single game.  Resulting in ANOTHER Championship.

Linganore went on the road to play 2 other teams (one which they had already beaten) on their way to a State Title.

I say that, to say this...It doesn't matter where you start, it matters where you finish.  The end product is only as good as the amount of hard work you put in.  This team went through it's ups and downs and came up smelling the roses.

Times get hard, but you have to be HARDER...The bumps and bruises you receive in life should give you the determination to keep striving for your goals 100%.  If you stay down every time you get knocked down, you'll NEVER achieve your goals.

So set your goals, go hard and follow you #HEART!

Jeneba Tarmoh doesn't have enough H.E.A.R.T to compete.

The other day I'm at work, and I come across an article about U.S. Track and Field 100 Meter sprinter Jeneba Tarmoh online.  After reading the article twice, I felt deeply disturbed over some of the comments she made about attempting to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Apparently she finished for a tie in 3rd place.  Currently there are no "official" tiebreakers for such an event.  The United States Track and Field Association came up with the idea of having a "run off" to settle the dispute between her and Allyson Felix.

Despite having a chance to run another final 100 Meter Dash for an opportunity to participate in the 2012 London Olympics, she chose NOT to run...

Jeneba and Allyson had a photo finish tie and the result was a final "showdown" between the two .

She said, and I quote, "Running in this (runoff) came down to how I felt internally.  Would my heart be at peace running or would I not be at peace?  If I was at peace, I would have run," Tarmoh told The Associated Press on Monday night.  "My heart was not at peace with running."

MY only problem with this, is that she stated that her HEART was at peace with NOT running...I may be wrong, and feel free to correct me...but...SHE IS A SPRINTER!!!!  Regardless of any outcome, your HEART should ALWAYS be in the spirit of competition.  This is what you do and how you earn a living.

If your existence is to participate (currently that is) in the 100 Meter Dash, you should NEVER give up!  Regardless of the outcome.  Train your ass off and compete the same way.

The Olympics only come around ever 4 years and it is an honor to represent your country, win, lose or draw.  You (Jeneba) should represent yourself the same way...

What's fair...?

I'm a true believer that sports provide kids a parrallel between competition and "adult" life.  I know there are certain people who say that, "it's just a game".  I respect that...I disagree, but I respect that.  In any sporting event, you can draw a parallel to real "adult" life in which they/you can translate into experience.

This brings me to Bishop Gorman.  Bishop Gorman, in laments terms, is a MONSTER when it comes to High School sports.  If you don't know who they are, feel free to look over their history here -----> (Bishop Gorman).

This past year, Gorman won the 2011 State Football Chip (slang for Championship)

Won the 2011 Boys State Hoops Chip

and won the 2012 State Baseball Chip too...

Now, is this "fair" to the other schools in Nevada?  What's fair?  Is fair a level playing field?  Is it everybody has an equal shot at winning?  This is where I have pros and cons...

Pros:
1. Life isn't fair.  Period.
2. It IS a school (regardless if they recruit or not).
3. Every day of your life provides a lesson.  So if you don't like losing, don't do it.

Cons:
1. Public Schools have to play with what they have.
2. Public Schools are at an automatic disadvantage.
3. Creates division instead of competition.

In short, without standing on my soapbox, schools in EVERY district should play with who lives in their district.  But in sports as in real life, this isn't the case.  Progressive thinkers do what they can to gain an advantage.  This leaves the Nevada public schools at a great disadvantage.  But as in "adult" life, you have to adapt to your environment and keep moving forward.  Life isn't fair guys, sometimes sports isn't either.  You can either cry and complain, or you can get back on your grind and get busy...

Playing the Game with a Little League H.E.A.R.T

This past weekend I went to go watch my cousin play in his T-ball league.  I absolutely love sports, so it really doesn't matter to me what I'm watching, as long as the players play hard, keep the complaining to a minimum and play their H.E.A.R.T's out.

As I'm watching these little guys and gals play, I can't help but notice that most of them are completely clueless to the rules of the game, but they really DON'T care...they are out there to have a good time!  Some may or may not actually "enjoy" playing, but the looks on their faces wouldn't give that away.

Most of these kids are playing their first year of organized ball and are out there on the diamond to experience a true game.  Regardless if score is kept or not, they are learning sportsmanship and the basic rules.  Most of all, they are learning how to play hard, smart, as a team and with H.E.A.R.T!

It's sad that as most kids get older, they lose the basic concept of how the game should be played (see the previously mentioned characteristics...) and the joy of the game which keeps them involved.  These youngsters showed a ton of enjoyment during their 3 innings and generally kept huge grins on their faces.

So let's not let this simple lesson that a bunch of 4-6 year old's have shown us...The game (any game) is about having fun and playing with H.E.A.R.T.  If you do this, even in a loss, you'll know that you gave it your all and that's all that matters.

The one thing that you can't teach, coach or buy is...

HUSTLE.

It is virtually impossible to teach, coach or buy this state of mind.  You show me someone who can, and I'll show an entire NBA team that has floor burns. But let's stay on track...Hustling whether in sports or in life is about a desire to want "it" more.  The "it" is defined by the individual who has that burning desire.  It burns soooo much that they will stop at nothing to attain it.

As I watch the NBA playoffs, I can't help but notice some players get a "pass" for not hustling, while those that do virtually get overlooked.  This ultimately reminds me of the consummate hustler...Mark Madsen  (even though as a kid, Kurt Rambis was THAT hustler).

With all the talent in the NBA there is absolutely NO reason that Mark Madsen or Kurt Rambis should be employed...none.  But yet there they were.  Mark for over 9 years and Kurt 14.  Why?  How is it that two individuals who are limited physically can stay in a league this long when the average NBA career is 4.7 years?

HUSTLE

All it takes to succeed in life as well as sport is the desire to do what the next man/woman won't.  As the case with Mark and Kurt, they were willing to sacrifice their bodies for the greater good of the team.  In turn, the team rewarded them with a roster spot.  It's really that simple.  The desire to dive on the floor, grab rebounds, take charges, run back on defense and make their teammates better in practice manifested itself into long careers (by NBA standards).

This term of "hustling" also translates into the "real world".  If you're not willing to go the extra mile (doing what others won't do), then you should never be surprised when your results match your outcome.  It's really as simple as this, work your tail off, reap the benefits...simple.

Just remember, a little bit of hustle (no matter if you think they were scrubs or not) allowed two physically ungifted players to last longer in a sport than the average player...Just sayin'...

What does it take to complete a triathlon...

Well physically, I don't KNOW what it entails, I mean, I KNOW, but I've never had to do it myself.  I know (from watching and participating in its events individually on a recreational basis, but I digress...) from watching them on television and watching my good friend Chad B. Davis in real time complete one.  I know it is physically and mentally demanding and the only way to get through is to not give up.

Not giving up isn't necessarily a mental thing, but in my opinion more of a H.E.A.R.T thing.  Having enough attitude, resilience and toughness.  I've know Chad for over four years now and if anyone embraces these terms it's him...

I actually just got off the phone with him a couple of hours ago and he reminded me that he's participating in another Tri in Kansas City this weekend.  And that brought back a flood of memories of when he worked his tail off training for his very first one.

Chad is a great cyclist, awesome runner and was a decent swimmer (after the first Tri, he trained harder to bring his swim up).  With those components you would think that a Tri would be a piece of cake.  Well, you have to also realize that you are not only competing with others and the clock...you're also competing against yourself as well.

Prior to Chad's first Tri, he actually broke one of his toes...reread that...He BROKE one of his toes!  Do you know how painful it is to break a bone which the doctors can do absolutely NOTHING for you?  "Wrap it up, here's some Tylenol...".  Gee, thanks.  Well if you think a broken digit was going to stop him, you don't know how big his H.E.A.R.T is!

He continuously trained around his injury by devoting more time to his swim and cycling, while decreasing his time on his feet running.  He ate better, hydrated as best as he could and stayed the course of his training, all while working a full-time job which in my opinion is way more than full-time!

All of his hard work culminated in his participation and completion of his first Tri in Havre de Grace, MD.  I was really proud of him because I knew how hard he had to work to get to where he was at.  He overcame his swim, a broken toe and the terrible...terrible, Maryland humidity!  Below are some of the pictures from his first Tri and I look forward to seeing new pictures from his Tri this weekend in KC.  Go get'm Chad!  Show those three events just how big your H.E.A.R.T is!!!

Chris Polk

Chris Polk

Like any other football junkie, I was enthralled with the NFL Draft.  Well, the Draft has come and gone and like every year, there are guys who were taken too high, too low, or didn't get selected at all.  A lot of people think that not being selected is a testament to how good they (the player in question) "thought" they were.  Others think it's an oversight on scouting.  I tend to think that most scouts, GM's, coaches and owners fall in love with "numbers" and not the PLAYER who's putting up those numbers.

While yes, it is true that some guys put up gawdy numbers because of the system they played in and it's easy to fall in love with stats...Sometimes you have to actually LOOK at the stats and see HOW they were put up!  I was told in my college Stats class that there are 3 kind of lies...lies, damn lies and STATS.  Statistics tell part but not the entire story.  Behind every statistical gain, there is a player behind them.  Whether these stats are system generated, roster induced (lack of quality players behind the starter) or basic workings of the team (i.e. Nebraska under Tom Osborne), there is a player that has worked their tail off to achieve them (college football is really hard...)

This brings me to Chris Polk.  I've watched this young man ball his H.E.A.R.T out for the University of Washington over the past 4 years (he Redshirted his Frosh year because of injury).  He carried the team in 2009 when Jake Locker was getting all the love in the Great NW.  Everybody knows that every great Quarterback NEEDS a running game.  Without a running game, the defense just "sits back" and waits on every pass.  Needless to say, when Jake was struggling in 2010, it was Polk who picked up the pieces and gained over 1,400 yards rushing on 260 carries (yeah, you read that right...260).

In his final year at the University of Washington, the school once again leaned heavily on Chris until first year starter Keith Price got his feet wet.  If you don't believe me about Polk's contribution to the Program, check out his bio for yourself...-----> Chris Polk stats.

All of this, his leadership, playing through pain, getting very little recognition lead him to what...?  Not getting drafted?  Are you kidding me?  This guy played his ass off for 3 years!  But you know what?  That doesn't matter to Chris.  Chris now has an opportunity to play for the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL and it's not his "Stats"that got him there...it was his H.E.A.R.T.

So the next time you think that stats prove a player belongs, or how many accolades he/she has gained or how many Twitter followers they (you) have.  You need to look into their eyes and analyze what's beating in the chest.  Because there is nothing worse than competing against someone who still thinks they have something to prove and has one big ass chip on their shoulder...

H.E.A.R.T Athletics is all about YOU....

When I came up with the acronym of H.E.A.R.T, is was an attempt to capture the essence of what I thought was important when it came down to the most basic components of sports.

H-ave
E-nough
A-ttitude
R-esilience
T-oughness

This not only sounded good to me, but it completely made sense.  When we watch watch any sporting event (even if we're too old to play and work in corporate America...) we see individuals who in a sense make us sick.  I'm NOT passing judgement, but we notice individuals who don't necessarily exude the same values we (me and you) have in life as in sports.

We see it every day (during a game or at work).  The player who reluctantly lays down a crappy bunt, refuses to take on a pulling guard, doesn't want to dive on the hardwood or chooses to leave the office early while the rest of the office works overtime to get ish done.

I knew since 2007 that I wanted to start my own business H.E.A.R.T Athletics LLC to cater to those that possessed the same values that I have.  My company is about providing products to individuals who think (or want to) like I do and are tired of the same "cookie cutter" B.S. that is feed to them by BIG BUSINESS.

H.E.A.R.T Athletics LLC is about YOU and how you feel about sports and life.  If you are tired of feeling under appreciated, unwanted and undervalued, you have to stop by the website and take a look around.

We provide clothing and products that put you at the focal point.  Our H.E.A.R.T Athletics LLC Player Card makes your athlete feel like a Superstar with their very on shirt.

On the front you have your very own picture, with a custom card design and on the back is everything about you to wear around town to show off YOUR accomplishments.  That's what we're about...YOU.

So stop by the FACEBOOK PAGE (and like us!) and follow us on TWITTER.  At the very least post this blog on your Facebook page and spread the word.

Thank you!  My company would be NOTHING without you guys.
